The Port is putting the finishing touches to the route: the new Container Exchange Route (CER) on Maasvlakte will have manned trucks
The putting into operation of a special Container Exchange Route at the Port is now that little bit closer. The Rotterdam Port Authority has reported that three companies will be using this route for their transport requirements. The first manned trucks should be using the connection by the end of 2023.
The Container Exchange Route (CER) is meant to ensure containers can be transported more easily on Maasvlakte. It concerns a closed 17 km road network that may only be used by companies in the port area.
The network, however, is being given substance in a different way. The Rotterdam Port Authority reports that carriers have the option to drive along the route using manned vehicles. Originally, the idea was to have containers be transported from A to B using unmanned vehicles. This led to criticism from port staff and the FNV Havens Dutch Dockers’ Union. They were afraid jobs would be lost at the Port of Rotterdam.
The Rotterdam Port Authority will now ensure companies that will be using the CER are connected to this network. The route is already there, but has not been operational until now. Now that the RWG, ECT and Kramer Group terminals have joined the project, the CER will still be made operational next year although with a slight delay.
